Is a Bluetooth keyboard is needed?

I'm getting ready for my new iPad, and I wonder if the IPad 3 Bluetooth Keyboards is essential. Since it has a large screen, it's hard to type in just like iPhone, so 'm thinking buying a keyboard if it's needed.
